Is Prolozone therapy painful?
Most patients describe Prolozone injections as uncomfortable rather than severely painful — a pressure or brief stinging sensation as the solution is injected, similar to or slightly more noticeable than a standard vaccine. The area is typically numbed beforehand to reduce discomfort. Some soreness at the injection site for a day or two afterward is common and expected, and is different from pain during the procedure itself.
What the injection itself feels like
A local anesthetic is used first to numb the skin and underlying tissue. Once that’s taken effect, most patients feel pressure and a brief stinging or burning sensation as the oxygen-ozone solution is injected — this typically lasts only a few seconds per injection site. Some areas, like joints close to the skin surface, tend to be more sensitive than others.
What’s normal afterward
Mild soreness, a dull ache, or slight swelling around the injection site for one to three days is a normal part of the response, not a sign that something went wrong. Over-the-counter pain relief is generally fine for this — your provider will tell you if anything should be avoided based on your specific treatment.
When to actually be concerned
Sharp, worsening pain, spreading redness, fever, or swelling that gets significantly worse rather than gradually easing over a few days are not expected and should be reported to your provider promptly. Most patients don’t experience this, but it’s worth knowing the difference between normal post-injection soreness and something that needs a call.
