Is HCG weight loss safe?

Short answer

The main safety question is not the HCG but the very-low-calorie diet it accompanies. Intakes around 500 calories per day carry real risks including nutrient deficiency, gallstone formation, electrolyte disturbance, muscle loss, and fatigue, and are unsafe for a number of people. HCG itself is a prescription medication with its own cautions, and over-the-counter homeopathic HCG products are unapproved and have been the subject of FDA warnings.

Risks of the calorie restriction

Severe restriction can cause inadequate protein and micronutrient intake, loss of lean muscle mass, electrolyte disturbances, and gallstones — the latter being a well-recognized consequence of rapid weight loss. Fatigue, dizziness, headaches, irritability, hair thinning, and cold intolerance are commonly reported.

It is also not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and requires particular caution or is unsuitable in the presence of a range of medical conditions and medications.

Risks associated with HCG itself

As a prescription medication, HCG carries recognized cautions including a risk of blood clots, headache, mood changes, and injection-site reactions. In men it can affect hormone levels. It should not be used by anyone who is pregnant or has certain hormone-sensitive conditions.

Over-the-counter and homeopathic products marketed as HCG are a separate problem. They are unapproved, have been the subject of FDA warning letters, and in many cases contain little or no actual HCG.

What makes it safer, if you proceed

Proper medical screening before starting, baseline and follow-up laboratory testing, adequate protein intake, monitoring during the program, and a genuine plan for the maintenance phase rather than an abrupt return to normal eating.

Any new symptom during a restricted-calorie program — chest pain, shortness of breath, severe abdominal pain, fainting, or an irregular heartbeat — needs prompt medical attention rather than waiting.
