What does a typical HCG weight loss program look like?

Short answer

A typical program runs three to six weeks and combines daily low-dose HCG — by injection or sublingual drops — with a strictly limited calorie intake, historically around 500 calories per day, followed by a structured maintenance phase as calories are reintroduced. Programs include an initial medical evaluation, baseline labs, and regular check-ins. The very-low-calorie diet is the demanding part and carries real medical risk, which is why supervision matters.

The usual phases

Most protocols describe a short loading phase, a restriction phase of roughly three to six weeks combining daily HCG with a very limited calorie intake and specified food list, and then a maintenance phase in which calories are increased gradually while HCG is stopped.

The maintenance phase is where long-term outcome is largely decided, and it is the phase most often skipped or rushed.

What supervision should include

A medical history and examination, baseline laboratory testing, screening for conditions that make severe calorie restriction unsafe, and regular review during the program — not a prescription handed over with a diet sheet.

Any program should also be explicit that HCG has not been demonstrated effective for weight loss and that the restriction is doing the work. That framing changes what you are actually agreeing to.

The risks of the diet itself

Intakes at this level carry risks including nutrient deficiency, gallstone formation, electrolyte disturbance, fatigue, hair thinning, and loss of lean muscle mass. Rapid weight loss also commonly triggers metabolic adaptation that makes regain more likely without a genuine maintenance plan.

These protocols are not appropriate for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and are unsuitable or require particular caution in a number of medical situations. That screening is a core part of the evaluation, not a formality.
