What is HCG and how does it support weight loss?
HCG is human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone produced in pregnancy and used medically to treat certain fertility and hormonal conditions. In weight loss protocols it is given in small doses alongside a very-low-calorie diet. It is important to be direct about this: the FDA has stated that HCG has not been demonstrated to be effective for weight loss, and the weight loss seen on these protocols is generally attributed to the calorie restriction rather than to the hormone.
What HCG actually is
HCG is a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy. Medically, it is FDA-approved for specific uses relating to fertility and to certain hormonal conditions in men and boys. Use for weight loss is off-label.
The weight loss protocol originates from work published in the 1950s proposing that HCG mobilizes stored fat and reduces hunger during severe calorie restriction. That proposed mechanism has not held up well in subsequent controlled research.
What the evidence says
Controlled studies comparing HCG against placebo in patients following the same very-low-calorie diet have generally found no significant difference in weight lost, fat distribution, or reported hunger. The FDA has stated that HCG has not been demonstrated to be effective adjunctive therapy for weight loss, and requires that labelling say so.
In plain terms: the diet appears to do the work. Anyone presenting HCG as an independent fat-loss agent is going beyond what the evidence supports.
Why medical supervision is the part that matters
The very-low-calorie diet used in these protocols is itself a significant intervention, with real risks including nutrient deficiency, gallstones, electrolyte disturbance, and loss of lean muscle mass. It is not appropriate for everyone and should not be undertaken unsupervised.
If you are considering a supervised weight loss program, the supervision, the nutritional adequacy, and the plan for maintaining the result afterwards are what determine whether it is done safely — with or without HCG.
